St Joseph Medical Center

Early detection of breast cancer helps save lives. In conjunction with St. Patrick Hospital, St. Joseph Medical Center implemented a mammogram voucher program to help women with early detection. Under this program, St. Joseph Medical Center arranged for free mammograms and no cost follow-up diagnostic services for patients who were either uninsured or whose insurance would not cover the fees.

After visiting with Board-Certified OB/Gyn Kelly Bagnell, MD, and her partner Jamie Straub, DO, at St. Joseph Medical Center for her annual check-up, patient Lois McAllister received a voucher two years ago and has continued to take advantage of this program.

When they told me my mother’s cancer may have started in her breast, it was important for me to get regular mammograms.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recommends women receive an annual screening starting at age 40. Other women under 40 with a family history or women with concerns about personal risk should see their primary care provider for a mammogram.

Some patients are fortunate to have health insurance and find that most of the cost of care is covered. Others are not as fortunate and face both physical and financial hardships. This program is just one of the ways that St. Joseph Medical Center is committed to providing services to the vulnerable in its community.
